The Classical Rhetorical Technique of Imitation

I recently picked up a copy of Fiction Writing Master Class by William Cane.  You can't own too many books on the craft of writing as my bookshelves can attest.  In it, I discovered the lost art of imitation.  Basically the greats of days gone by such as Fitzgerald and Melville learned by first attempting to imitate the great writers that came before them.  Schools quit teaching it in 1930 in favor of the more modern view held today of finding your own voice by trial and error.  I am in love with this idea and have decided to attempt it for myself.  I am going to post a short story on my blog each month in honor of a different author for the next year and I am inviting other writers to do the same.  I am going to feature Agatha Christie for the month of October.  I will be posting my own story in early October and I ask that fellow writers send me their Agatha Christie inspired pieces to my e-mail address at  I will be choosing one to post on my blog on October 31st.  Please send me your short story of 4,000 words or less by October 15th so that I will have time to choose a favorite.  I'd also love to hear suggestions on other writers that you would like to see featured.  Get busy my fellow creatives.  Let the learning begin!
